The surname Nuttal was first found in Nottinghamshire at Nuthall, parish, in the union of Basford, S. division of the wapentake of Broxtow. Nuthall Temple, occupying a commanding site near the village, is a handsome mansion, built in imitation of the Villa Capra, at Vicenza, in Italy, and surrounded by an extensive park embellished with plantations and an artificial lake. 1 The place dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was first listed as Nutehale. 2 Literally the place name means "nook of land where nut trees grow" from the Old English words "hnutu" + "halh." 3
