Early Origins of the Milsten family

The surname Milsten was first found in Wiltshire where the name is associated with the parish of Milston, two miles from Amesbury. At the time of the taking of the Domesday census in 1086 the village of Milston was held by Robert FitzGerald, a Norman knight who was granted the Manor and estates for his assistance to William the Conqueror in his conquest of England in 1066. At this time the village was notable for its mill, an historic building which was located on the banks of the River Avon, later famous as being the birthplace of William Shakespeare. In the 17th century Milston was also famous as the birthplace of politician Joseph Addison.
