Early Origins of the Lyndon family

The surname Lyndon was first found in Cambridgeshire where Gilbert de Lindona was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. 1

Years later, Simon de Lindon was listed in the Assize Rolls for Lincolnshire in 1202 and later again, Richard de Lyndone was found in the Subsidy Rolls for Leicestershire in 1327. In Essex, William Lyndon was registered in the Feet of Fines for 1405. 2

One source notes that the name could have been derived from either "dweller at the Lime-Tree Hill [Old English lind, a lime-tree + dún, a hill]" or "dweller at the Flax-Hill [Old English lín, flax + dún]. Lindon, Dorset, was the Anglo-Saxon Lindún" 3

Regarding the last note, we could not find Lindon, Dorset, but we did find Bigge's Quarter, Northumberland which noted "the lands of this place, which was once called Linden Quarter, and Carlisle's Quarter." 4

Lyndon is a small parish, in the union of Oakham, hundred of Martinsley, county of Rutland. 4
