Early Origins of the Luppi family

The surname Luppi was first found in Reggio a city in Emilia and capital of the province of Reggio. It was founded 187 B.C as Regium. Later, under the Lombards, it was the seat of Dukes and Counts. It became a walled city in 1229 A.D. By 1400, it was held by the d'Este family. The original 12th century cathedral was reconstructed in the 16th century It is a beautiful city rich in art and culture. In those ancient times only persons of rank, the podesta, clergy, city officials, army officers, artists, landowners were entered into the records. To be recorded at this time was in itself a family honor.
