The history of the Lunn family goes back to the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. It is derived from the family living in an area that was referred to as the laund, which was Old Norman word meaning the open space in a forest or the lawn. There were a number of locations in England with this topograghic place-name including Yorkshire and Lancashire.

The surname Lunn was first found in Yorkshire at Lund, a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire in the union of Beverley, Bainton-Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill. There is also a Lund in Lancashire in the parish of Kirkham, union of the Fylde, hundred of Amounderness but this parish was constituted in 1840.
