The name Lunan has a long Anglo-Saxon heritage. The name comes from when a family lived in an area that was referred to as the laund, which was Old Norman word meaning the open space in a forest or the lawn. There were a number of locations in England with this topograghic place-name including Yorkshire and Lancashire.

The surname Lunan was first found in Yorkshire at Lund, a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire in the union of Beverley, Bainton-Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill. There is also a Lund in Lancashire in the parish of Kirkham, union of the Fylde, hundred of Amounderness but this parish was constituted in 1840.
