The name Langherst is an old Anglo-Saxon name. It comes from when a family lived in the ancient town of Langhurst in the southern county of Surrey. This habitation name was originally derived from the Old English words lang meaning long and hyrst meaning wooded hill. The original bearers of the surname lived in an area that was defined by the long wooded hill in the county of Surrey. 1

Alternatively the family could have originated at "Longhurst, (Longhirst), a township in the parish of Bothal, near Morpeth, Northumberland." 2 3 4

Early Origins of the Langherst family

The surname Langherst was first found in Surrey where Richard de Lanherst was listed in the Curia Regis Rolls of 1221. Later, Robert de Longehurst was found in the Subsidy Rolls for Sussex in 1332. 5

The Placita de Quo Warranto, temp. Edward I-III. included a listing for Walter de Latighurst, Sussex, 20 Edward I (during the twentieth year of the reign of King Edward I.)

The Hundredorum Rolls of 12763 had only one listing, that of John de Langehirst. Hertfordshire. 2

To escape oppression and starvation at that time, many English families left for the "open frontiers" of the New World with all its perceived opportunities. In droves people migrated to the many British colonies, those in North America in particular, paying high rates for passages in cramped, unsafe ships. Although many of the settlers did not make the long passage alive, those who did see the shores of North America perceived great opportunities before them. Many of the families that came from England went on to make essential contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. Research into various historical records revealed some of first members of the Langherst family emigrate to North America: Henry Longhurst joined many who had landed in New York in the mid-1600's.
