The ancient Anglo-Saxon surname Hickmen came from the baptismal name for the son of Hickman. As the naming tradition grew in Europe baptismal names began to be introduced in many countries. Baptismal names were sometimes given in honour of Christian saints and other biblical figures. There are very few Christian countries in Europe that did not adopt surnames from these religious figures. Migration of the Hickmen familyFor many English families, the political and religious disarray that shrouded England made the far away New World an attractive prospect. On cramped disease-ridden ships, thousands migrated to those British colonies that would eventually become Canada and the United States. Those hardy settlers that survived the journey often went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Hickmen or a variant listed above: Henry Hickman settled in Virginia in 1635; Richard Hickman settled in Jamaica in 1661; William Hickman settled in Virginia in 1655; Thomas Hickman settled in Virginia in 1652.
