Haury History, Family Crest & Coats of ArmsThe story of the Haury family stretches back through time to the Viking settlers who populated the rugged shores of Scotland in the Medieval era. The Haury name comes from a place named by these Vikings and was used by a family who lived in Halcro, in South Ronaldsey, Orkney. The place-name is taken from the place-name Halcro in Caithness, where the family originated. Early Origins of the Haury familyThe surname Haury was first found in Caithness (Gaelic: Gallaibh), the northern tip of Scotland, a Norse/Viking controlled region from the 9th century, which became the Earldom of Caithness, in Scotland where they held a family seat from ancient times, and where family tradition claims that they are descended from the natural son of King Sverrir of Norway. At early times the family migrated to South Ronaldsay where they gave their name to the lands called Halcro. Today Halcrow is a hamlet in northern Manitoba, Canada, but the origin of the place is unknown. Early History of the Haury familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Haury research. North America was far from Britain's oppressive monarchy. There, the Scottish found land and freedom, and many even the opportunity to pay back England in the American War of Independence. This brave heritage survives today largely in Clan societies and other patriotic Scottish organizations. Research into passenger and immigration lists has brought forth evidence of the early members of the Haury family in North America: Haury Settlers in United States in the 18th Century
