The origins of the Haslerig name lie with England's ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. It comes from when the family lived in the West Riding of Yorkshire in the village of Hesselgreave.

Early Origins of the Haslerig family

The surname Haslerig was first found in Northumberland where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Wotteslade. In 1280, King Edward 1st of England also granted to this north country Clan the Manor of Yetham Corbet. Simon de Hasilrig was progenitor of this distinguished family. 1

But by the late 15th century, some of the family were found at Humberstone in Leicestershire. "The manor [of Humberstone] was granted by the Conqueror to Hugh de Grentemaisnel, and was held as part of the honour of Leicester, in 1474, by Sir William Haselrigge." 2

Migration of the Haslerig family

To escape oppression and starvation at that time, many English families left for the "open frontiers" of the New World with all its perceived opportunities. In droves people migrated to the many British colonies, those in North America in particular, paying high rates for passages in cramped, unsafe ships.
