 England Early Origins of the Hanington familyThe surname Hanington was first found in Hannington, a parish, in the union of Brixworth, hundred of Orlingbury Northamptonshire. Literally the place name means "estate associated with a man called Hana," from the Old English personal name + "-ing" + "tun." 1 There are two other parishes so named, one in Southampton and the other in Wiltshire, but the Northamptonshire parish is the one that the family originates for this one dates back to before the Conquest when it was first listed as Hanningtun in 1023. The Domesday Book of 1086 listed the place as Hanitune. It also includes an entry for Alfuuin de Haminteuna, de Haningtuna, de Hanningetuna. Almost one hundred years later, John de Haninton was listed in the Pipe Rolls of Hampshire in 1176. 2 "In a charter of A.D. 1023 Hannington (Hants) occurs as Hanningtun in the Latin portion and as Hanittún (tó Hanitúne) in the Anglo-Saxon (boundaries) part. Thousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries.
