Goodship History, Family Crest & Coats of ArmsEarly Origins of the Goodship familyThe surname Goodship was first found in Norfolk where Walter Goodchep was listed in the Pipe Rolls of 1166. Later in London, William Gudchep was listed in 1236 as was Hamo Godchape in 1315. The origin of this name is difficult. Most historians assume it to be a hawker's cry, 1 2 equivalent to 'good and cheap' derived from the Old English "god" for "good, and "ceap" meaning "barter, price." One source claims the name is "from Goodcheap; a location name in Kent." 3 "The name is from the Middle English expression 'good cheap' which was used of a state of the market good for the purchaser, when prices were low, hence 'one who gives a good bargain'. The nickname might also have been taken from the vendor's cry." 4 The Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 included entries for Ricardus Godchep, Cambridgeshire; and William Godchep, Surrey. 1 The source Placita de Quo Warranto, temp. Edward I-III. lists Jordan Godchep, London, 20 Edward I (in the 20th year of King Edward I's reign.) Interestingly, "the corresponding family name Goedkoop is found in Holland." 2 Early History of the Goodship familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Goodship research.
