The name Fredol is cited as early as the ninth century, with a bishop of Narbonne who was mentioned in a letter from Pope Leon IV, dated circa 852. Beranger de Fredol was bishop of Maguelone in the thirteenth century; Cardinal Beranger I de Fredol was born at the chateau of La Vérune, near the town of Montpelier, around 1250. André de Fredol was bishop of Maguelone and in 1308 was elected bishop of Uzès; Arnaud Fredeti was named bishop of Couserans in 1309; Beranger II de Fredol was elected bishop of Béziers in 1309 and became cardinal; Guillaume de Fredol was named bishop of Béziers in 1313.
