Early Origins of the Cullimore family

The surname Cullimore was first found in Shropshire at Colemore, a parish, in the union of Petersfield, hundred of Barton-Stacey. "This parish, noticed in the Domesday Survey and other records under the name of Colmere, is supposed to have derived that appellation from the situation of the greater portion of it, formerly, near the western mere or boundary of the ancient forest of Wolmer, where great quantities of charcoal were made." 1

It is here that we found the first record of the family. Hugo de Lacy de Colemere was listed in the Cartulary of Haughmond Abbey in Shropshire in 1155. A few years later, Peter de Colemere was canon of the Chichester church (1198-1199) and the Antiquities of Shropshire listed Peter de Colemere, as living in Montgomery Castle in 1227. The Calendar of Patent Rolls in 1235 listed John de Colemere, as Chamberlain of London.
