Cheriton History, Family Crest & Coats of ArmsEarly Origins of the Cheriton familyThe surname Cheriton was first found in Devon at Bishop Cheriton, a parish, in the union of Crediton, hundred of Wonford, Crockernwell. 1 Cheriton literally means "village with a church," so as one would expect there are many other parishes so named in Southampton, Somerset and Kent. 2 Most date back to the Domesday Book of 1086 when they were listed as Ciretone, Ciretona, Cherintone and Cerintone. 3 Odo of Cheriton (c. 1180-1246) was an English preacher and fabulist who belonged to a Norman family which had settled in Kent and were named from their manor at Cheriton. His father William had been a crusader with Richard Coeur de Lion. Odo studied at the University of Paris where he gained the degree of Master. He then visited the south of France and also lectured at the university in Palencia. In 1233 he returned to England, having inherited his father's widely dispersed estates. In c. 1246, he died and was buried in Rochester Cathedral. His brother Waleran inherited his lands. It is here that we find the first record of the family in early rolls. We found William de Cerinton listed in the Feet of Fines for 1201-1202. This person is presumed to be a descendant of the aforementioned William, father of Odo. Later, Stephen de Cheritin was recorded in the Assize Rolls for Cambridgeshire in 1260 and Richard Cheryngton was listed in the Assize Rolls for London in 1383. 4 Cheriton Fitzpaine in Devon was a manorial addition to Cerintone 3 in 1335 to become known as Cheriton Fitz Payn at that time. 2 Early History of the Cheriton familyThis web page shows only a small excerpt of our Cheriton research.
