In the Holy Roman Empire, hereditary surnames were adopted according to fairly general rules, and after the 12th century, names that were derived from localities became increasingly widespread. The name Bruechner, is a local surname, derived from a pre-existing place name. There were several places so named, including ones in Silesia, Saxony, Bohemia and Austria. Local names, when coupled with the German preposition "von," which means "from" or "of" originally denoted the proprietorship of the village or estate, and indicated that the bearer of the name was an aristocrat. Over the years, the "von" has frequently been dropped from surnames.
