Brearley History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Brearleys to arrive in North America:

Brearley Settlers in Australia in the 19th Century

• Mr. John Brearley, British Convict who was convicted in Lancaster, Lancashire, England for life, transported aboard the "Earl Cornwallis" in August 1800, arriving in New South Wales, Australia 4
• Thomas Brearley, English convict from York, who was transported aboard the "Arab" on February 22, 1834, settling in Van Diemen's Land, Australia 5
• John Brearley, English convict from Lancaster, who was transported aboard the "Anson" on September 23, 1843, settling in Van Diemen's Land, Australia 6
• Mr. William Brearley, English convict who was convicted in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England for 7 years, transported aboard the "Bangalore" on 28th March 1848, arriving in Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land) from Bermuda 7
• Joseph Brearley, English convict from Yorkshire, who was transported aboard the "Anna Maria" on March 6, 1848, settling in Van Diemen's Land, Australia 8

• John Michael Brearley OBE (b. 1942), English cricketer
