Their name comes from having lived in one of two places called Blackford, both in the county of Somerset. One was a parish near Wincanton, while the other was a chapelry in the parish of Wedmore, near Axbridge. The name is derived from black ford, indicating a dark place in which there was a river crossing.

Migration of the Blackfoot family

To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Blackfoot were among those contributors: Mary Blackford who settled in Virginia in 1649; George Blackford who settled in Charles Town [Charleston], South Carolina in 1635; was strongly involved in the development of Barnstable and Cape Cod..
