The oldest branch of the family either originated from or lent its name to the town of Biedenkapf which lies near the source of the Lahn river at the foot of the mountain Epscloh in the Rothaar region. Literally, the word "kapf" means the summit of a mountain. Chronicles first mention Hermann Biedenkap of Kassel in 1390.
