The Baumann surname comes from the German word "baum," or "boum" in Middle High and Old German, meaning "tree." As such, Baumann may have originally been a nickname for someone who lived by a tree. Other instances of the Baumann surname no doubt derive from the Middle High German word "bumann," meaning "a farmer."
