The town Baeza was known as "Baetia," by the Romans. Following its conquest by the Visigoths, Beatia was the seat of a bishopric of Baeza. Arabs know the town's name as Bieza.

This surname may derived from the Latin words "beatus", from "beo", which mean "one who makes people happy (used in its moral sense)" or "he who is blessed". In this latter case, the name would be denoted as a nickname.

Baeza, Ecuador is named after the city in Spain.

Early Origins of the Baeza family

The surname Baeza was first found in Baeza, in the province of Jaén, Andalusia. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Baeza (Latin Beatia) established in 715 AD was a Visigothic Catholic bishopric, suppressed under Moorish rule.

The family is believed to be descended from Don Luis de Baeza y Mendoza who entered the Order of Santiago, one of the river knights who most distinguished himself in the conquest of Baeza in 1227. 1
