The prestigious French surname Ascencio is a proud sign of a rich and dynamic ancestry. The earliest forms of hereditary surnames in France were the patronymic surnames, which are derived from the father's given name, and metronymic surnames, which are derived from the mother's given name. The patronyms were derived from a variety of given names that were of many different origins. As well as the names of the saints of the Christian Church, many of the most common French surnames are derived from personal names of Germanic origin. They derive from the language of the Franks, who controlled France between the mid-5th and early 8th centuries. The name Ascencio is derived from the Old French forename "Ascelin", which itself comes from the Germanic name "Adalin".

Early Origins of the Ascencio family

The surname Ascencio was first found in Burgundy (French: Bourgogne), an administrative and historical region of east-central France, where this ancient family has held a family seat from very early times.

The family, as a noble family of France, was raised to nobility and confirmed with letters-patent for their members and their descendants. In the 1700's, Eustache Benoît Asselin was not only a lawyer but also a notary and legislator and was known to his community as a man of noble bearing and dutiful purpose. In 1790 he published a book called, "Coutume du gouvernement, bailliage et prévôté de Chauny".

The branches of this prestigious family became more prominent and achieved acclaim through their valuable and constant contributions to the community in which they lived. Jean Augustin Asselin, known as a priest and a legislator in his region, was elected as Mayor of the town of Caerbourg in 1792 and became one of the major administrators of the department of la Manche.

In recognition of their dedicated and faithful service other bearers of the name were rewarded with titles and raised to nobility, such as, Louis Jean-Baptiste Asselin, who acquired a barony in the early 1800's. Alexandre Asselin de Villequier, magistrate and legislator, was created Baron, and Jean François Alexandre Asselin was granted Knighthood and became the Baron of Villequier in recognition of his valuable services to the King and country. To this day, the name Asselin is linked to the great French families.
