The surname Andis was first found in Valentia a city of Calbria in the province of Catanzaro. It suffered a disastrous earthquake in 1783 which destroyed the city but under French occupation it was rebuilt and became capital of the province of Catanzaro. Frederick II built a castle there. Before the quake the history of the city goes back to Dionysius in 388 B.C. It became Carthaginian, Brutti and Syracusian. Later, in 294, Vibo Valentia was a flourishing Roman colony about 294 B.C. There are many artifacts and relics from this ancient civilization.
